More Than 30% of Americans Still Won’t Consider EVs
Nearly a third of Americans surveyed said they would not consider purchasing an electric vehicle (EV), and those that would are looking to alleviate range anxiety.

Nearly a third of Americans (31%) said they would not consider buying an electric vehicle (EV), while 34% said they would, a recent survey found.
The seven-day Reuters/Ipsos poll also revealed a fairly partisan split among American respondents. About half of all the Democrats asked said they would consider an EV, while only 26% of Republicans and 27% of independents said they might mull it over for future automobile purchases.
There are more than 80 EV models currently for sale in the U.S., but EVs represented less than 6% of all automotive sales last year. While the EV share of the American vehicle market is still relatively small, EV sales are expected to continue to rise in line with the 2022 growth rate, which was up more than 60% over the previous year.
Looking farther into the future, President Joe Biden said he wants to see half of all new vehicles sold in the U.S. be EV or plug-in hybrid models by 2030.
Among those who would consider an EV purchase, the poll found that 56% of respondents would consider vehicles priced lower than $50,000. While prices for everyday EV trims are generally moving down, prices for most EVs are still above that threshold. In order to move acceptance of EVs along at a faster pace, last year, the Biden administration increased the EV tax credit to $7,500.
Among the potential buyers of EVs, the poll also found that 35% of respondents wanted an EV that offered 500 miles or more of range per full charge, however, those models are quite expensive.
Another 37% were willing to settle for a minimum of 300 miles and the good news is that the number of EVs with 300-plus mile ranges is growing as 14 new ones were introduced in the 2022 model year alone, the U.S. Department of Energy said. 30% of Americans Won’t Consider EVs.
