Back in February 2007, the reverse mortgage landscape in Alabama looked completely different from what it does today.

As far as I could tell, there were exactly two of us in the entire state dedicated to helping seniors navigate these unique loans. The other guy wouldn’t even leave his desk.

I looked at it differently. I figured that if a senior was trusting me with the equity in their home, the least I could do was look them in the eye. So, I made a decision that defined the next two decades of my career: If you called me, I would come to you.

That decision turned me into a bit of an Alabama geographer. I started driving the highways and backroads, finding towns I barely knew existed, and fell in love with the communities that make up our state.

From Huntsville to Lanett: Learning the State by Heart

In those early days, before smartphones and built-in dashboard GPS systems were common, I navigated by paper maps and local landmarks. The northern part of the state quickly became a second home. I actually kept a corporate rate at a hotel up in Huntsville, staying three days at a time just so I could efficiently visit folks in Decatur, Muscle Shoals, Athens, and Cullman. —and realizing just how far north our beautiful state goes.

Then there was the day I got a call from a homeowner in Lanett, all the way over on the eastern edge of the state near the Georgia line. I had to squint at the map to figure out where it was, but I hopped in the car and drove.

Over the last 20 years, a huge portion of my business has centered around the top half of the state. I’ve spent countless hours traveling the 65 corridor, sometimes veering off to  Tuscaloosa all the way across to Anniston and Gadsden. If you live around Rainbow City, Weiss Lake, or Logan Martin, there is a very good chance I’ve worked with one of your neighbors.

Bridging the Gap Between North and South Alabama

While I’m personally located in Birmingham, Hoover, Vestavia, Chelsea, and Trussville—and regularly drive up to two hours in any direction to meet clients at their kitchen tables—my reach extends all the way down to the coast. We’ve built a strong digital presence down south, serving retirees in Foley, Fairhope, Gulf Shores, and Orange Beach. I’m currently on the lookout for the right experienced local professional to permanently anchor our physical branch down there, but in the meantime, I still handle our coastal clients with the same care.

You might wonder how a guy based in Birmingham ends up writing so many loans on the Gulf Coast. Years ago, I used to write an educational column for a statewide newspaper. Seniors from South Alabama would read it, call me up, and say, "Scott, I know you’re up north, and I'm not going to make you drive all the way down here because you probably won’t..."

But then they’d add, "...but I'm actually heading up to UAB Hospital in a few days for a checkup, or a family member's surgery. Can we meet while I'm passing through?"

We’d sit down, grab a coffee, look over the numbers, and get it done. Time and time again, Alabamians proved they wanted to do business with a local face, even if it meant meeting in the middle.

Why 20 Years of Pure Specialization Matters to You

I am a 20-year reverse mortgage veteran. Out of all the loans I have closed in my entire life, I have only done about five conventional mortgages. I chose to specialize because I saw how deeply these programs could change a senior’s life when structured correctly.

Ever since the housing market shifted, I’ve watched a lot of traditional originators with very little experience jump into the reverse mortgage market because their regular business slowed down. The truth is, as soon as standard interest rates drop again, those folks are going to jump right back out.

I’m not going anywhere. I am a broker, which means I represent many different lenders. I have direct contracts with the exact same massive companies you see advertised on television by famous spokespeople or printed in national magazines. We use the exact same applications, the exact same underwriting guidelines, and the exact same financial products.

The difference? I don't have to fork out a single dime for their multi-million dollar advertising budgets, and I can pass that efficiency on to you.

More importantly, I control the timeline. When you call a massive national call center, your paperwork gets buried on a desk in another time zone. You’re looking at a two-to-three-month closing process, if you're lucky. At ReverseMortgageAlabama, I keep the gears moving. We routinely close our loans in a month or less.

Born in Alabama Means Zero Pressure

I was born and raised right here in Alabama. That means I don’t believe in high-pressure sales tactics, fast-talking pitches, or making you feel rushed into a major financial decision. This is your home, your equity, and your retirement. My job is to give you the clear facts, tell you if a reverse mortgage makes sense for your situation, and step back to let you make the best choice for your family.

Whether you want me to drive out to meet you, split the distance, or handle things clearly over the phone and internet, I’m here to help.
